The Glamour Profession band came to light in early 2014 as a project designed to honour the sound and spirit of Steely Dan compositions. Unique, sophisticated, and ground-breaking, the jazz-rock sound of Steely Dan is as relevant today as it was when it began in 1972 under Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who were then college-age geeks with a near pathological taste for jazz and irony-laced story-telling. Their hilarious narratives are embedded in infectious and playful funk grooves, layered with wickedly devious jazz harmonies inspired by Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Gil Evans, to name but a few. The Ottawa-based, ten-piece band spent eighteen months building a repertoire that now tops thirty Steely Dan tunes, including their biggest hits. They debuted in January 2016 to a sold-out audience at Ottawa’s Shenkman Arts Centre and earned rave reviews. Today, their shows include a wide range of Steely Dan songs, and their celebration of this rich music is sprinkled with brief anecdotes about the songs and the composers Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Glamour Profession will be playing this special online concert with a stripped down band of six players; all of whom are Ottawa and Montreal-based jazz and rock musicians who themselves are geeky Dan fans to their very core.
